Basic Rules Of Writing MBA Dissertation Acknowledgements

The MBA dissertation acknowledgements page is a place where you can express your gratitude to those that have been influential, supportive or helpful on your path towards completing your graduate work. It’s usually not more than a page long, but it can be tricky to write, especially for someone who is inexperienced in the process. Here are some basic rules you should know about writing this section.

  • Location of acknowledgements
  • Acknowledgements are generally writing on a separate page immediately following the dissertation’s abstract and just before the table of contents. When you are first typing your work out on a word processor it would be a good idea to use page breaks to save you the time from having to go back and format your content.

On rare occasions your department or graduate advisor may request that you put in acknowledgments following a different format. In this case, you would be better off simply asking for a sample page from your advisor, otherwise simply use an academic resource from a journal or book to get an idea about the most common formatting.

  • People who should be mentioned
  • One of the biggest points of confusion in writing an acknowledgements page is knowing who should be mentioned. It’s important to be concise and not mention every person that has offered assistance along your academic journey. Generally, there are personal and professional people to which you might be grateful.

Academically speaking, you should probably thank your advisor and anyone who was able to provide you with research assistance or guidance. When it comes to a personal mention you will want to thank anyone that provided you with support outside of the research world, whether it be through financial support or encouragement.

  • Using the appropriate tone
  • Many students mistakenly use a serious or academic tone when writing this page. This isn’t the best strategy to follow unless you want to set a pompous tone for the rest of your work. It’s better to have a tone that is mixed between friendly and formal. There are some pretty standard phrases that aren’t overblown and get straight to the point. Consider using “My research would not have been possible without…” or simply “I am profoundly grateful to…”
